ARE YOU INTERESTED IN THE FUTURE? Of course you are. Everyone wants to know where life might lead. This is why so many people look at their horoscopes or read books which claim to predict what is to come. Some people are fascinated by predictions of doom and disaster. Others want reassurance that everything is going to be all right.
The Bible includes a lot of prophecy but it is totally different in character and purpose from what passes for prophecy in the popular press. Often Bible prophecy begins with the phrase “This is what the Sovereign Lord says”. In other words, it is not the prophet’s message but a message from God. Bible prophets speak in a forthright way about evil and injustice and ungodliness. And then they speak about future events. Theirs is a message with a clear purpose. They said, ‘here is the problem; and this is God’s solution.’
Then, as now, people didn’t really want to hear the truth. The Bible records that 2,700 years ago people said to the prophets who spoke in God’s name “Tell us pleasant things, prophesy illusions. Leave this way, get off this path, and stop confronting us with the Holy One of Israel!” (Isaiah 30.11). About 760 years later the Apostle Paul wrote about a time when people would “gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear (2 Timothy 4.3). And it’s the same today. No one really enjoys being told home truths. We are all itching to hear pleasant things.
This is where Bible prophecy is unique. True, it confronts us with the truth about ourselves and the world in which we live. But it also promises a time when things will be very different. Those who respond to the warning voice of the prophets can be part of what the Bible calls the
